Pete Wasson, age 76 of Gatesville, passed away on Monday, July 11, 2011 in a local hospital. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Willie Clarke officiating. Inurnment will follow at 2:00 P.M. at the Central Texas Veterans Cemetery Columbarium, with full military honors. Platoon Sergeant Peter Wasson, US Army, Ret. was born on December 19, 1934 in New York City. He was adopted at an early age and became the chosen child of his parents, R. Gordon and Dr. Valentina P. Wasson. After his schooling in New York, he joined the US Army from the Massachusetts National Guard. During his military career he served in Japan, Okinawa, Korea, Germany, Vietnam and the United States. He served as a COBRA AH-1G Platoon Sergeant and as an instructor at the US Army Flight School at Ft. Rucker, Alabama. He retired from active duty in 1973 after 20 years of proud military service. After retiring from the military, he worked at the Gatesville State School for Boys, until it closed in 1979. He was then employed by the Honorable Judge Byron McClellan as the first District Court Coordinator for Coryell County. He later became an ISP Probation Officer for Coryell County and worked there, until retiring in 1990, due to health complications. Currently, he was proudly serving his second term as an elected councilman for the City of Gatesville. He met and fell in love with Nancy Ellen Cunningham, his wife and lifetime partner of 54 years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. They were married at Walter Reed Chapel in Washington, D.C. on July 13, 1957. As a proud military family, they lived in Washington, D.C., Germany, Fayetteville, North Carolina, Ft. Rucker, Alabama, Ft. Hood, Texas and settled in Gatesville, Texas in 1973 after his retirement. He was a great lover of animals and over his lifetime enjoyed the company of many beloved pets. His latest love was of his cat, named Mouse. He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother and father-in-law, Herbert and Helen Cunningham of Comanche, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Wasson; son, David Wasson and his wife Joanna of Gatesville; sister, Dr. Mary Britten of Binghamton, New York; two grandsons, Chris Allen and David Allen, both of Gatesville; nephew, Gordon Britten and his wife Teal Burl and their son Ian of Summerville, South Carolina; niece, Tina Holden and her husband Rob and their children Elizabeth and James of England. Memorials may be made to the Coryell Memorial Hospital Foundation, 1507 W. Main St., Gatesville, TX 76528.
