Wilda Marie Hammer, age 85 of Gatesville, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2011 at a Temple hospital. Funeral Services will be held at 3:30 P.M. on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at the Cornerstone Church (Church of God Faith of Abraham). Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 1:30-3:30 P.M. Wednesday at the church. Wilda was born on December 4, 1925 in Levita, Texas to the late Ernest McCorkle and Erna Wolfe McCorkle. She graduated from Gatesville High School and attended college at Texas Women’s University. She graduated with a Master’s degree in English from Baylor University. She married Virgil Hammer on March 1, 1957. Wilda and her family would travel to Minnesota during their summers, returning to Texas in the Fall, so that she could teach. She was a teacher in Brownsville, Copperas Cove, Killeen, Evant and Gatesville. She retired from teaching after 36 years. She loved to read and paint with oils. Her passions in life were God, her church and her family. She was a lifetime member of the Cornerstone Church in Gatesville. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her grandson Scott Weiss. Wilda is survived by two daughters, Kathryn Smith and husband Benjamin of Gatesville; and Cherie Weiss and husband Dennis of Valley Mills; brothers, James and Bill McCorkle; sisters, Dorothy McCorkle, and Anita Zirkelbach; grandchildren, Jessica Kelly, Julie Smith and Bryan Weiss, and great grandchildren, Camden, Anna and Grace Kelly. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Cornerstone Church in Gatesville.
