Lalla Rookh Ward

Mrs. Lalla Rookh (Chubby) Martin Ward, age 89 of the Pidcoke community, passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 in a local care center. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, November, 19, 2011 at the Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Willie Clarke officiating. Mrs. Ward was born on November 25, 1921 in the Tablerock community of Coryell County, to the late Grover and Eppie Perryman Martin. She grew up in Gatesville and graduated from Gatesville High School in 1939. She earned her B.A. in Sociology from The University of Texas. She married Ray Ward on May 30, 1943. She and her husband retired to their ranch in Pidcoke in 1977. He preceded her in death on October 2, 2006. She founded the Coryell County Genealogical Society and the Coryell County Historical Commission. She was one of the leading members of the Coryell County Courthouse Restoration Project in the mid 1980’s, and was instrumental in the Coryell County Family History Book in the late 1980’s. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pidcoke. She is survived by daughters, Janet L. Ward of Gatesville, Cynthia L. Hunt and husband James of Amarillo; sons, John M. Ward and wife Kim of Arlington; Ray R. Ward, Jr. and wife Elizabeth; four grandchildren, Robert Acosta, Seth Ward, Amanda Acosta, Hannah Ward; and one great grandson.
