Gladys Barr

Gladys Barr, age 90, of Gatesville, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2012 in a Temple hospital. Services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Flint Creek Cemetery. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to service time on Tuesday. Gladys Brazzil Barr was born on April 1, 1922. Her parents were James Edwin Brazzil and Alice Hamilton Brazzil. Gladys had nine brothers and sisters: Bennie, J. D., Lois, Jim, Chuck, Sara, Bobby, Charlene and Bill. She attended Flat School. She lived her entire life in Flat, The Grove, Temple and Gatesville. She married Arlington Eugene Barr on September 6, 1941. Brother Ollie Williams performed the ceremony at his home on Flint Creek. Gladys and Arlington had three children: Lana , Ron and Michael. A.E. and Gladys were farmers for much of their married lives. Gladys worked briefly at John and Ruby Graham’s store at The Grove, but most of the time she cooked and cleaned and worked beside her husband. A. E. and Gladys loved the simple pleasures of living in the country. They worked hard, cried a little and laughed a lot. They enjoyed each other’s company and the company of their large extended families. Summertime revolved around enormous family reunions. Gladys was a woman of remarkable, unshakeable faith. She and her family rarely missed one of Brother George Siler’s sermons at County Line Methodist Church, located just across the road from their rock house on Owl Creek. When the church at County Line discontinued regular church services, Gladys and her family joined First Baptist Church Flat where she remained a member for the rest of her life. A. E. and Gladys were married for 45 years until God took him home on November 11, 1986. When A. E. died, Gladys devoted the remainder of her life to her family, her neighbors and her church. She attended services at First Baptist Church Flat until her physical condition prevented her from traveling. She loved God, and she faced her own death with the calm assurance of eternal life. Gladys is now at a family reunion in heaven with her parents, her husband, sister Bennie Williams, sister Willie Lois McCutchen, brother James Wilson Brazzil, brother Chester (Chuck) Brazzil, sister Sara Nell McCutchen, sister Charlene (Sammy) Netherland, brother Billy Knox Brazzil, daughter-in-law Toni Schaub Barr and granddaughter Anna Catherine Barr. She is survived by sister Bobbie Jo Geiselbrecht, brother J. D. (Pokey) Brazzil, daughter Lana and husband Roger Janssen of Billings, Montana, son Ron Barr of Kerrville, son Michael Barr and wife Ginger of Gatesville; 5 grandchildren – John Denny and wife Ardawna, Ronna Denny and husband Sean, Carrie Curtis and husband Ray, Cy Barr and wife April, and Joseph Barr;11 great grandchildren – Deirdre Ruiz, Curran Denny, Brandon Curtis, Mason Barr, Kate Denny, Kyren Ingraham, Taya Denny, James Denny, George Denny, Ethan Denny, and Kyrsten Denny; and one great-great grandchild – Lilianna Ruiz. Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
