Ruth Irene Merritt

Ruth Irene Ross Merritt, 88, passed away on Saturday, Jan 12, 2008 at her home in Brownfield. Graveside Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, Jan 16, 2008 at Restland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 PM on Tuesday at Scott’s Funeral Home. Mrs. Merritt was born on September 22, 1919 to the late Guvvy Van Ross and Mattie Bell Bird Ross in Flat, Texas. She gradated from Crawford High School as the valedictorian of her class. She married George Truett Merritt on November 14, 1942 in Gatesville. They lived in Odessa before moving to Monahans where they lived for 16 years. The family moved to Brownfield in 1971. She worked for many years as a teller for Brownfield State Bank before retiring in the early 90’s. She was a member of the Brownfield Church of Christ and devoted many hours to World Bible School Program. Reading and writing were long time passions. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Ruby Williams and a brother, Ted Ross. She is survived by her son, David Lloyd Merritt of Ft. Worth, daughter, Chris Merritt of Austin; 3 grandchildren, Brandi, Megan, and Michael and one great grandson, Jacob.
