Jack E. Edwards, age 89, of Gatesville, Texas passed away Friday, January 18, 2013. Funeral services will be 2:00PM, Monday, January 21, 2013 at Scott’s Funeral Home with Rev. Samuel Crosby officiating. Burial will follow at Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 – 6:00PM, Sunday, January 20, 2013 at the funeral home. Jack was born on February 2, 1923 on the Edwards’ Farm near Osage, Texas to the late John Bethel and Lota Etchison Edwards. As a boy, Jack rode horseback four miles to school at Osage each day. Later he attended school in Gatesville and then graduated from Oglesby High School, where he was a member of the basketball team. Most of his time was spent helping his father on the farm, but at times he and his friends would walk to Coryell Creek and spend the day playing and swimming. He was married September 15, 1956 to Elizabeth Jo Davis. During WW II, Jack served in the 9th Air Corps in a fighter group. After basic training in Florida, he went to Airplane Mechanics School in Lincoln, Nebraska; Propeller Specialist School, Chanute Field, Illinois; and Overseas Training in Ogden Utah. He was then sent to England, France, Belgium and Germany. While serving overseas, he was awarded an EAME Campaign Medal with six Bronze Stars for his actions in the Invasion of Normandy and other major battles of the European Theater. Jack also received a Presidential Unit Citation, a French Croix de Guerre, and a Good Conduct Medal. After his discharge, Jack returned to Osage to resume farming. He served as Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Committee member and as an A.S.C.S. County Committee member for 21 years. Jack was a member of Osage Baptist Church since an early age. He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Elizabeth Jo Edwards. Jack is survived by his sons, Jack Edwards and wife, Trina and John Edwards and wife, Melissa; brother, Robert Jim Edwards; three grandchildren, Tim Edwards, James Edwards and Joe Edwards.
