Nathan Lewis Cooper, age 87, of Gatesville passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the Gatesville Church of Christ. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery. There is no set time for visitation. Nathan was born on August 30, 1926, in Gatesville, Texas, to Wesley Ward Cooper and Mary Ann Maines Cooper. He was the tenth of eleven children. He started school in Marlin, and then moved to the Gatesville area in the second grade. He attended several small schools around Gatesville to include Hubbard, Turnover, and Ewing, graduating from Gatesville High School. He was in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1953 during the Korean Conflict. After leaving the Army, he worked at several jobs. He started a driving school, worked for a filling station in Killeen, and then worked for an air conditioning company doing sheet metal work, a skill that he trained for in the Army. He worked two years at North Fort Hood and then he transferred to South Fort Hood where he retired after 28 years in the sheet metal shop. He married Mable Dean Woodson Cooper on May 17, 1963. Nathan was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and nine siblings. Nathan is survived by a sister, Vella Mae Yielding of Spring, Texas; a stepson, Bill Woodson and wife, Elaine of Gatesville; two step-grandsons, Koi Woodson and wife, Beth of Fort Worth, and Tannon Woodson and wife, Elizabeth of Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care and personal involvement shown to Nathan by The Meadows staff.
