Jane Scott Brasher Thornton, age 66, of Gatesville passed away Friday, May 16, 2014. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wray Nunn officiating. Burial will follow at the Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Tuesday May 20, 2014 at the funeral home After a short illness, Jane Scott Thornton of Gatesville, Texas passed away Friday May 16th at Scott and White Hospital in Temple, Texas. Her family and friends were by her side. Jane was born and raised in Gatesville, Texas, the daughter of Emma Lou and Robert Scott. She graduated from Gatesville High School in 1966 and attended the University of North Texas in Denton graduating with a Bachelors of the Arts in English. She taught at the Texas State School after graduation, and eventually took a job teaching English as a Second Language within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Jane had a lifelong passion for education, especially towards those who had the greatest need. She also spent many years as a teacher in the Gatesville ISD, and found time to start a successful video rental business. After retirement Jane spent her time being devoted to her children, grandchildren, and church. In her spare time she worked at Scott's Funeral Home comforting those who had lost loved ones, again sharing her strength with those who needed it most. Jane's sense of compassion and faith will be sorely missed and forever remembered by all who knew her. Jane was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul Thornton and her former husband, Keith Brasher. She is survived by her brother Robert "Bob" Scott of Austin, son Randal Brasher and wife Jennifer of Round Rock, daughter Nancy Stevens of Gatesville, son-in-law Chris Stevens of Macon, Georgia, grandchildren Saebren and Maryjane Stevens and Rowan Brasher, and her companion Rick Chappel. She also had numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In honor of Jane's lifelong passion for education and faith, the family request donations in her name be made to either Grace Assembly, 1408 Waco St., Gatesville, TX 76528 or to Teach for America at teachforamerica.org.
