Evelyn Elizabeth Neel, long-time Gatesville resident, went home to be with her Savior on August 13, 2008. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 16, at 10:00 a.m. at Scott Funeral Home in Gatesville, Texas, with interment following at Restland Cemetery in Gatesville. Relatives and friends are welcome to visitation at Scott Funeral Home from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday evening. Born September 17, 1924, in Happy, Texas, Evelyn grew up in Gatesville and remained in this area until she married the love of her life, Sammie R. Neel, in October 1947. Moving with Sam’s job as a Superintendent of Construction for bridges and dams with an international construction company, Evelyn and Sammie lived in many places in the United States and for several years in Peru. After retirement, they returned to Gatesville and settled in once again to life in the small, quiet town they both loved. They owned a farm near Turnersville where they raised Texas Longhorn cattle. Evelyn had her favorites and would not let Sam sell any of “her” Longhorns. Although she did not have any children of her own, her many nieces and nephews and their kids and grandkids and great grandkids “enjoyed” the benefits of her input into their upbringing. No matter how much she fussed, however, they all knew the main thing -- she loved them. She was truly a character… an unforgettable, one-of-a-kind, loving, beautiful character. We are blessed to have had her in our lives, and we will all miss her so much! Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Jeff and Oma Warren, sister Carolyn Warren, brothers Ausbron and Jimmy Warren, brother-in-law John Neel, niece Patsy Puckett, nephew Jason Neel, and various aunts and uncles. She is survived by her husband, Sam; her brother Richard Warren; her sisters: Eva Teat and husband William, Dixie Neel, Sandra Watts and husband Jerry, and Barbara Watts; sister-in-law Linda Warren, all of Gatesville; along with numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, great grand nieces and nephews, great great grand nieces and nephews, and many friends. The family wishes to express our thanks and gratitude to Dr. Gault and the staff of The Meadows and to Dr. Clay and the staff at Gatesville Memorial Hospital for their kindness and care. We are especially thankful also for the loving consideration and treatment provided by Evelyn’s nephew, Dr. James Hodges.
