Chester Gore, age 88, of Gatesville passed away Friday, September 26, 2014. Graveside services with full Military Honors will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at Central Texas State Veteran’s Cemetery in Killeen. During Chester's service with the 102nd Infantry Division in Germany an American flag was needed. It was the idea of Pvt. Chester L. Gore of Uneeda, West Virginia to make an American flag by using the red from a Nazi flag, the white from sheet, and the blue from a women's dress. The material was taken to a woman in town who claimed she had never seen an American flag. Private Gore drew a picture of the Stars and Stripes. On the following day, the entire company was formed and an official flag raising ceremony was held with all men saluting the colors. This flag replaced the Nazi flag that had flown over the Ohrdruf Concentration camp. He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. He is survived by his wife Edel; three daughters, Anneliese Pfeifle, Grace Kennedy, and Jeanie Hanna. He will be greatly missed by grandsons, Miles Kennedy, Andrew Hanna, and Douglas Hanna. He has one surviving sister, Edna Stone, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org or to an animal charity of your choice.
