Debra LaJuan Herring, age 62, of Gatesville passed away Friday, October 3, 2014. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Eagle Springs Baptist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to service on Tuesday. Debra was born on April 10, 1952 in Gatesville, Texas to John and Wanda Ingram Herring. Debbie received a Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Houston in 1987. She worked for Houston Community College for 33 years before retiring in 2006. She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors while in Houston. Among these were the HCC Women’s Support Services Special Woman Award in 1990, HCC Outstanding Service Award in 1993, special recognition from the United States Secret Service for her work with them in 2002, and the State of Texas 2005 Woman of Excellence Award as designated by Governor Rick Perry. She was an officer in numerous organizations and served as the State President for the Texas Colleges Placement and Training organization. Debbie was an avid quilter and was a member of the Temple Quilt Guild and the Diamond Bee. She enjoyed Quilting Retreats, entering Quilt shows and participating in Guild activities. Debbie was always optimistic and helpful and generous to those in need. She was always the champion of the underdog. Debbie accepted Christ as her Savior at the age of thirteen and greatly loved the Lord. “Sharing equals caring…if you can identify with someone by finding a common interest, you will care more about getting to know that person.” From her writings. Debra is survived by her parents, John and Wanda Herring; sisters, Pam Herring and Marcy Pitts and husband, Tim; brothers, John J. Herring and wife, Barbara and Michael Herring.
