Billy Mayhew, age 78, of Gatesville passed away Monday, November 17, 2014 after losing his courageous battle with cancer. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Jonesboro Cemetery. He was born on September 8, 1936 in the Pancake Community of Coryell County, Texas to the late Monroe and Gladys Jones Mayhew. He graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1955, and then he served in the United States Army. On August 15, 1963 he married Betty Wilkins in Gatesville. He later attended T.S.T.I. to study machine shop technology and ran his own machine shop for 45 years in South Mountain. Billy never bought anything he could build himself, from a bulldozer to riding lawn mowers. He was a machinist by trade, a perfectionist, and a very hard worker. He was instrumental in the incorporation of South Mountain and served as Mayor of South Mountain for years. He was also President of the Mountain Water System for a number of years. In his later years, Billy became an avid woodworker. He was a master of making scale model stage coaches, wagons, and anything else he saw in a western movie. He spent many hours with his grandchildren building many different things and teaching them some of his knowledge. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Sammy Mayhew. Billy is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Mayhew; son, David Mayhew and wife, Marci; daughter, Suzanne Mayhew; grandchildren, Jake and Marleigh; niece, Janet Lopez; nephew, Johnny Mayhew; and his long time Army buddy, J.W. Gore and his wife, Judy. Memorials may be made to charity of your choice.
