Virginia Rose Davis Hutto, age 80, of Jonesboro passed away on January 10, 2015 in Gatesville. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 pm on Monday, January 12, 2015 at Scott's Funeral Home. A private burial service will be held at Jonesboro Cemetery on Tuesday, January 13, 2015. Virginia was born on April 4, 1934 in Waco Texas, the eldest child of Edwin David Davis and Rosa Bess Barlow Davis. She was Homecoming Queen and Valedictorian of the La Vega High School Class of 1952. Virginia attended Baylor University and graduated Cum Laude in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science Degree. She met Leonard Hutto at a La Vega football game when he began coaching there in the fall of 1952 and they were married on June 1, 1954. They recently celebrated their 60 year wedding anniversary. Leonard and Gina moved to the Gulf Coast area of Texas a few years after their marriage, and continued their teaching careers at Clear Creek ISD. Both of their children, Louann and Greg Hutto, were born in Texas City, Texas. In 1967, they bought a farm near Jonesboro, and continued their teaching careers in Hamilton, Jonesboro and other nearby communities. She spent most of her career at Hamilton ISD, first teaching home economics, and then serving as the high school librarian. She was outgoing, personable and touched the lives of many of her students. Virginia was a lifetime educator and completed her teaching career with the Windham School System in Gatesville, retiring in 1990. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and was named the Texas Outstanding Academic Teacher of the Year in 1988, by the Windham School System of the Texas Department of Corrections. Virginia possessed many wonderful qualities. She had a remarkable love of family, a gentle, sweet spirit, and a great sense of humor. She always exhibited a willingness to pitch in and help others and had an abiding faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ. Her boundless capacity to love and her non-judgmental Christ like spirit endeared her to all. Virginia's love of people and her willingness to help those in need led her to establish a Women's Mentoring Ministry to help TDCJ women inmates. She spoke on behalf of and served with Angels Unaware for several years and received the George W. Bush Governor's Volunteer Service Award for TDCJ in 1996. “Nana” as we called her later in life, was a member of Jonesboro Baptist Church, and served as pianist for many years. One of her favorite phrases was “seeing the need”, and by loving and serving others she filled many needs. She was admired, respected, and loved by many. She was the finest person we've ever known, and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary Colleen Davis Haak. She is survived by her husband, Leonard of Jonesboro; daughter, Louann Williams and husband, Clint of Jonesboro; son, Greg Hutto and wife, Angie of Keller; brother, David Davis and wife, Joy of Lafayette, LA; and sister, Ruth Davis of Dallas. She was a devoted and proud Grandmother to her five grandchildren, Meagan and Blake Williamson, Alaina, Audrey, and Ryan Hutto. The Hutto family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of The Meadows, Dr. Bates and Dr. Sheffield for their care of Virginia.
