James “J.D.” Atchley passed away peacefully on January 31, 2015 at the age of 93. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Scott’s Funeral Home with burial following at Live Oak Cemetery in Hamilton County. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home. J.D. was born on April 20, 1921 to the late Robert Lee and Alberta Ray Stepter Atchley in Hamilton County. He attended at Evant High School and enjoyed playing on the 6 man football team. He graduated in 1940 and married Mary Jane Harris on October 26, 1941. When WW II broke out, he faithfully served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. After the war, he settled back in Evant and enjoyed farming and ranching his whole life. He was a long time member of the Pearl Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Nadine Kinson. J.D. is survived by his wife of 73 years, Mary Jane Atchley; daughters, Mary Ann McGoogan and husband, John, Martha Ray Rommell and husband, Carrol; son, Douglas Eldon Atchley, and wife Linda; sisters, Frances Robinett, Marie Harper; brother, Jimmy Dale Atchley; 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren and a very special friend to the family, Butch Black.
