J.B. Littlefield, age 87, of Copperas Cove passed away February 25, 2015. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Hillsdale Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., Saturday, February 28, 2015 at the funeral home. J.B. was born on May 6, 1927 in King, Texas, the son of the late Percy and Alta Mae Bowlin Littlefield. On November 4, 1950, he married LaVeda Adamson. As a young boy growing up on north Table Rock Creek, he loved to tell stories about the old swimming hole and how people did without during the depression. He never complained about the weather, and rode his horse to Harman school house for his primary education. When the Harman School closed and classes moved to Pidcoke, he became a student bus driver. When school districts combined and Pidcoke School was closed, the Harman/Topsey students moved to Copperas Cove, where he was able to play ball, quarterback for Copperas Cove six-man football. In the summer of 1945 – 1947, he left the broom corn field of central Texas to serve in the U.S. Army, where he received a greeting from the President of the United States requesting his assistance. He was assigned to the 18th Chemical Warfare Unit at CML Corps Depot, Grafenwoehr, Germany, and his duties included being a truck driver, inventory/inspection specialist, disposal specialist, and guard duty. After saving his Army money, J.B. purchased a home place and in 1953 went into debt buying a tractor, hay baler, and all the equipment required for custom baling. Unfortunately 1953 was a bad drought year and farmers were baling anything they could, so he was still baling hay in December. Things picked up and J.B. could often be found baling hay from April until the last customer’s place was done late in the year. In 1956, he purchased the adjoining property and was able to start expanding his ranching and farming operation. Baling hay and cows were his passion; given the opportunity, he could talk for hours if you had an ear to listen about either. He was a Christian and served the Lord at Midway Church of Christ. He also served as a director for Coryell County Farm Bureau for over 50 years. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help. He loved his family and nothing thrilled him more than to have them around him at any opportunity. He will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Bond; and son-in-law, Kent Bell. J.B. is survived by his wife, LaVeda Littlefield; sons, Raymond Littlefield and wife, Debbie of Palestine and Richard Littlefield and wife, Christine of Copperas Cove; daughter, Janice Bell of Temple; five grandchildren, Bradley Bell, Jennifer Garza, Michael Littlefield, Jay Littlefield, and Darla Littlefield; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew Littlefield and Marissa Littlefield. Memorials may be made to Hillsdale Cemetery Assn., 7701 FM 1690, Copperas Cove, TX 76522.
