Lorene Powell, age 90, of Gatesville, went to spend Christmas and eternity with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Wednesday, December 24, 2008 at a local nursing center. A celebration of her is life scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 29th at First Baptist Church of Gatesville with Davey Gibson officiating. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 1-3:00 P.M. on Sunday at Scott’s Funeral Home. Lorene was born on December 12, 1918 near Coryell City to the late S. A. and Bertha Lee Goff. She graduated from Gatesville High School in 1937 and married Curtis Powell on April 22, 1939 in Gatesville. Lorene was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church in Gatesville for over 53 years, where she was active in the J.O.Y. Choir, W.M.U., and Sunday School. For nine years Lorene was the Care Center coordinator for her church. Strength, frugality, and optimism made her a shining example of “The Greatest Generation”. She was loving and devoted to family, friends, her dogs and her songbirds. Lorene was preceded in death by her husband in 1984; her parents; brothers, Hurl and Bert; sisters, Julia and Jesse; son-in-law, Tommy Harris. Lorene is survived by a son, Rodney Powell and wife Dorcas of Waco; daughter, Peggy Harris of Gatesville; granddaughters, Betsy Schultz and husband Chris of Phoenix, Amy Stanley and husband Jude of Denton, and Janelle McCollum and husband Jason of Hewitt, and Priscilla Powell of Waco, one grandson, Michael Curtis Green of Dallas; great grandchildren, Allison and Matthew of Phoenix and Alexis, Jacob, and Jaxson of Hewitt; 9 nieces, 9 nephews; several cousins; and sister-in-law, Doris Powell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church at 912 E. Main Street in Gatesville, TX 76528 or to the Rebuilding Fund at Latham springs Baptist Encampment.
