Sophie V. Melbern

Sophie V. Melbern passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2015. Visitation will be Friday, May 29, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Scott’s Funeral Home. Services will be at Scott’s Funeral Home on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. with interment following at Hemmeline Cemetery. Sophie V. Melbern was born October 4, 1919 in Gatesville, Texas, daughter of Grover C. Voss and Myrtle Patteson Voss. She attended Plainview School and graduated Gatesville High School in 1937. She married Robert L. Melbern on September 21, 1943. Sophie was a long time member of First United Methodist Church of Gatesville. She served as Sunday School Teacher in the Children’s Department and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. She was a member of Morris Federation, Gatesville Eastern Star #1005 and Waco Eastern Star #7. Sophie worked for the United States Department of Agriculture in Gatesville and Washington, D.C. She also worked at the Selective Service Office and was Secretary of the Gatesville Lion’s Club. Her husband, Bob was a farmer and rancher his entire life and Sophie supported him in all his volunteer and community service activities. She devoted her life to making others’ lives better while needing very little for herself. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister, Della Shelton. Survivors include son, Bill Melbern and wife, Penny of Gatesville; daughter, Paula Weeks and husband, Rhuben of Hewitt; twin sister, Pauline Lawrence of Belton; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces.
