Iva Jane Brown, age 96, of Mound passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2015. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 20, 2015 at Mound Cemetery with Rev. Bruce Cox officiating. Jane was born at home on February 28, 1919 in Georgetown, Texas to Joseph and Mattie Pickens Hardin. She and her twin sister, Ina Mae, were delivered by a midwife. Being small in size, warm bricks were placed under their blankets to keep them warm. Both sisters live until their 90’s. The Hardin-Pickens families were early pioneers to Texas. They also have a long history in America which dates back to the 1620’s. Passenger lists show that Jane’s antecedents sailed on the London Merchant to the colony of Henrico, Virginia. Jane was a child during the Great Depression. Like many other rural Texas families, the Hardin family led a hardscrabble existence during this period. Jane and her family worked long hours in cotton fields. As a result she developed a work ethic that lasted for the rest of her life. Jane married Lee Brown in 1945 after WW II. They moved to Mound. Jane worked at various jobs including waitress, school bus driver, and a manufacturing plant. Later in life, she worked for several years in the dietary department at Coryell Memorial Hospital in Gatesville before retiring. Bored with retirement, she returned to work for the Department of Human Resources through a special program for seniors. She continued to work until age 86. Jane loved music, dance, and fashion. Her favorite pastime was attending senior dances. She liked to dance every set. She prided herself on being able to walk two miles a day which she did until her late 80’s. Jane had a lifelong love of fashion. A trait passed on to her daughters and granddaughter. Jane was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lee Brown; daughter, Cathy; brother, Richard; and sister, Ina Mae Allen. Jane is survived by her daughters, Betty Smith and husband, Doak of Mound and Belva Clark and husband, David of Fayetteville, Arkansas; grandchildren, Blake Smith of Austin, Matt Clark and wife, Tasha, and Molly Clark, all of Fayetteville; great-grandchild, Margaret Grace Clark; niece, Judy Chaudoin; and nephew, Jimmy Allen. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mound Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 177, Mound, TX 76528.
