Carrie Dee Self, age 81, of Pearl, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, April 3, 2016, at Treemont Nursing Center in Dallas. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at Pearl Cemetery. Carrie was born on July 6, 1934 in Odessa, Texas to the late Ferris and Irene Landis. She spent most of her childhood in Iredell and graduated from Iredell High School. She was fond of referring to herself as a “country person”. Carrie married Harold Self in 1950, and they lived in Fort Worth with their two children until they moved to Pearl in the early 1970’s. In Pearl, Carrie enjoyed her quilting club, having a milk cow and a horse, and attending the Bluegrass Jamborees. She never met a dessert she didn’t like -- the sweeter, the better. She was a member of the Pearl Church of Christ, and the love and faithfulness of her friends from church and the community sustained her through the loss of her husband and daughter and her own struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. Carrie was much beloved and will be greatly missed. Carrie was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Self; her daughter, Charlotte Self O’Kelly; and her younger sister, Sherry Rae Hunt. She is survived by her son, Rick Self and wife, Mandy, of Dallas; sisters, Maurine Adams of Evant, Norvell Hernandez and husband, Paul of Ruidosa Downs, NM; grandchildren, Justin Self, Aubrey White and husband, Trey, Michael O’Kelly, and Matthew O’Kelly; and nieces, Phyllis Barnes and Stacy Perez and husband, Ron. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made locally to the Pearl Church of Christ, or to the Samaritan’s Purse or SPCA of Texas.
