Mrs. Johnye Carroll, 93, of Gatesville, passed away on July 21, 2009 at a local nursing center. Graveside services are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, July, 23, 2009 at the Gatesville City Cemetery with Rev. Tom Beaty officiating. Mrs. Carroll was born on April 5, 1916, in the Union Community of Coryell County, to the late John and Mary Rodgers Carroll. She grew up and attended school in Clifton and Gatesville. She married Joe Orbeck in 1941. He died in combat in Italy in 1944 while serving in the military during WWII. She later married Jack Carroll in February 1954 and they were married for 48 years. He preceded her in death in 2002. Johnye worked as a hairdresser in Gatesville for many years at Elizabeth’s Beauty Shop, Benson’s Beauty Shop and later owning her own shop, called Johnye’s Beauty Shop. She worked during the late 40’s to the mid ‘50’s at the local theaters, including being one of the first to work at the drive-in in Gatesville. She also worked as an LVN in the 50’s. In her late 40’s she attended the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and graduated with a BA in Education. She then taught at the State School for Boys for 10 years before retiring. She was an excellent seamstress, specializing in doll clothes, and she made the best lemon meringue pies. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters, Faye Carroll, Kathleen Meadows, and Lillian Meyers. She is survived by her son Joe Orbeck and wife Frances of Gatesville.
