Robert Gene Shelton

Robert Gene Shelton, 71, of Gatesville slipped from this life into the arms of Jesus on July 31, 2009, at The Meadows Care Center. A celebration of his life is scheduled for 10:00 A.M. Monday, August 3 at Scott’s Funeral Home in Gatesville. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery. Gene was born June 12, 1938, in Owl Creek, TX. He graduated from Gatesville High School in 1957 and married Jan Nichols in 1963. He was a member of the Texas National Guard. After thirty years of service, he retired in 1997 from Fort Hood where he worked as a heating equipment mechanic. Gene was well-known for his ability to fix anything and helping people with that gift. He loved mapping road trips, cheering for the Texas Longhorns, and enjoying the outdoors. A quiet, honorable man, Gene worked tirelessly to provide for the family he adored. He loved God and served faithfully at the West Main Church of Christ in Gatesville. He was preceded in death by his parents Harve and Grace Shelton, brothers, Wyatt, J.C. and Wilson Watts, and Rupert Shelton and sister, Hazel Wicker. Gene is survived by his dear wife of forty-six years, Jan, daughter Sherry and husband Jeff Conner of Rowlett, Texas, son Brad and wife Venus of Belton, Texas, his “girls” granddaughters, Krystal, Marina and Alyanna and his mother-in-law, Henrietta Nichols of Gatesville. Pallbearers are Geremy Keeton, Gip Keeton, Graig Keeton, Barrett Magee, Quinton Pearce, Rodger Snoddy, Glenn Vernon and Ted Waters. Honorary pallbearers are Johnny Easley, Bill Floyd, Albert Hernandez, Ben Hernandez, Luis Hernandez, Leon Howard, Kerry Magee, D.W. McDonald, Joe Orbeck, and Edwin Powell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Gene’s memory to Foster’s Home, P.O. Box 978, Stephenville, TX 76401; The American Cancer Society, 102 Alta Mira, Gatesville, TX 76528, or to the charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank the many friends who have shown their love and support through Gene’s illness.
