Edith May Wilkinson Maxwell, 95, of Waco, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Wesley Woods Care Center in Waco. Funeral services are scheduled for 9:30 A.M. on Friday, August 28, 2009 at Scott’s Funeral Home with Chaplain Suzanne Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Pidcoke Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 6-8:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home. Edith was born September 26, 1913 and was raised in Coryell County on Table Rock Creek near Pidcoke and in the Harmon Community. She was the daughter of George David (Dee) and Mary Alice Cooper Wilkinson. She married Stoney Maxwell on December 23, 1933 and they were married 71 years. Stoney and Edith lived in Coryell County and soon moved to the Lorena area and about 1941 moved to south Waco near Baylor University, where they rented apartments and houses to Baylor students for over 60 years. Edith was baptized during a revival meeting at Refuge Church in Coryell County on August 27, 1926. Both she and Stoney were faithful Christians and served in many ways in the churches they attended. During World War II, Edith worked in a factory making military supplies. She was a talented seamstress and sewed for other people. An avid gardener – she canned many jars of food and instilled in many young people the desire to garden. After the war, she devoted much of her time to nursing and caring for those in her community who needed assistance. She worked in Edgefield Baptist Church visiting and caring for shut-ins for several years. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Stoney, brothers, Joe, Boone, Harmon (Snow), Charlie, Garland (Duke) and Wayne (Fish) Wilkinson, and one sister Ruby Lee Armstrong. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Hazel Wilkinson of Alvarado, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bill and Maxine Maxwell of Waco, and numerous nieces and nephews.
