George Wood Dayton, age 94, of Gatesville, passed away Monday, May 29, 2017. Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, June 3, 2017 at Scott’s Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Buckhorn Cemetery near Moody. George was born on October 9, 1922 in Hoboken, New Jersey to the late Eugene Benjamin Dayton and Margaret Sauer Dayton. He attended school in The Bronx, New York. He entered the National Guard and served two years. He then was activated to active service in the U.S. Army on October 15, 1940. He served during WWII in the Pacific, he was honorably discharged on November 11, 1945. He was a Purple Heart recipient. He married Mary McDonald while in Camp Swift, Texas on January 4, 1944. They resided in Colorado, Kansas, and Arlington, Texas for 25 years, moving to Gatesville in 1989. He was a member the American Legion and a lifetime member of the DAV. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Dayton; daughter, Margaret Elizabeth Roberts; and son, Russell Dayton. George is survived by his sister, Peggy Fernandez; and many nieces and nephews.
