Helen Faye Baize Smith, age 88, of Gatesville, passed away Sunday, January 14, 2018. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m., Thursday, January 18, 2018 at Turnersville Cemetery with Deral McWhorter officiating. Visitation will be before the service from 9-10 a.m. at Scott’s Funeral Home. Helen was born on December 12, 1929 in Turnersville, Texas to the late Noah Preston Baize and Faye Huckerson Baize. She attended school in Turnersville. Helen married James M. Smith, Jr. on October 17, 1947. They resided in Gatesville until 1973, moving to Mart, and then back to Gatesville in 2000. She was a member of Cedar Ridge Church of Christ. Helen retired from TDCJ after 20 years. After her retirement, she loved helping raise her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They were the joy of her life. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Reford Baize, Verlon Baize; husband, James M. Smith, Jr., in 2014; and an infant daughter, Donna Smith. Helen is survived by her sons, Jim Smith and Randy Smith and wife, Kathy, all of Gatesville; daughters, Dianne Gidley and husband, Johnny of Salado and Janet Whitt and husband, Danny of Gatesville; sister, Mable Hill; brothers, Dreyfuss Baize, Bobby Baize, and Cleddy Baize; nine grandchildren, Kevin Smith, Chad Smith, Brandon Whitt, Jeff Smith, Jamie Whitt, Mandy Smith, Jason Wright, Tommy Wright and Kaitlin Smith; and 23 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Cedar Ridge Church of Christ, 104 Cedar Ridge Rd., Gatesville, TX 76528. The family wished to express their gratitude to The Meadows, Scott & White Hospice and Coryell Home Health Care especially to Earline Sims.
