James Wittie died peacefully on January 8, 2010 in Odessa, Texas, surrounded by family. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 at Walker Cemetery on Ft. Hood. Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Monday at Scott’s Funeral Home. James, known to family and friends alike as “Snooks” or “Pops,” was born to Curtis and Ella Mae Bates Wittie on November 26, 1918 in Gatesville, Texas. He joined the Army in 1938 and served in the European Theater, where he was wounded and awarded the Bronze Star for valor in the Battle of the Bulge. James moved to Odessa after the war, where he was a roughneck and truck driver until his retirement in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, and 1 sister. James is survived by brother, Roy Wittie of Gatesville; children, Gary Wittie of Scottsdale, Arizona, Shirley Josey of Waco, Kaye Baucum of Katy, Lynn Herring of Pearcy, Arkansas, Lana Cowan of Marble Falls and David Wittie of Austin; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In his later years he was assisted and much loved by Pam Anaya and her children, Emilio, Johnny, Ramona, and Isabel, of Odessa.
