Hilary "Hil" Thomas Coates, Sr.

Mr. Hilary “Hil” Thomas Coates, Sr., age 62, of Gatesville, passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at a Temple hospital. Graveside services, with military honors, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery with Dr. Willie Clarke officiating. The family will receive visitors from 7-9:00 P.M. on Thursday at Scott’s Funeral Home. Hil was born on July 31, 1947 in Richmond, VA to the late Howard and Judith Bartleman Coates. He served his country in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. He served aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS Orinsky, and was stationed in Tokyo, Guam, and the Philippines and many other places. He greatly loved his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert “Robbie” Coates; and infant daughter, and an infant son, Allen Daniel Coates. Mr. Coates is survived by his wife, Barbara Moore Thompson Coates; sons, Hilary Thomas “Thomi” Coates, Jr., David Oliver (Doc) Coates, and Michael Thompson; daughters, Dawn Renee Edwards, Kristel Lynne Coates, Mary Christine “Christie” Thompson, and Michelle “Shelly” Ryan Thompson; sister, Patricia Ann LaFrance and husband Rick; brothers, Howard Garfield Coates and wife Paulette, Allen Lee Coates and wife Linda, Daniel Melvin Coates and wife Carolyn, and Linwood Coates; 9 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
