Agustina Acosta, 82 of Gatesville, gained her wings on Thursday, November 16th, 2023 surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, November 20, 2023, at Scotts Funeral Home with Deacon Victor Beltran officiating. Interment will follow at Restland Cemetery. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Agustina was born September 13, 1941 to Francisco and Rufina Melendez in Los Juncos, Chihuahua, Mexico. She came from very humble beginnings, growing up helping and working on the farm with the family. As a teenager, she worked in the cotton fields where she met the love of her life, Manuel Acosta. They were married August 22, 1959, and made their homestead at El Mulato where they welcomed five children. Manuel and Agustina decided to immigrate to the United States to give their children a better life and on July 4th, 1979, they loaded up the truck with what they could and started on their journey. As a ranch hand, Manuel worked for LV and Georgia Arnett and followed them to Arnett, Texas, right outside of Gatesville. Agustina was a homemaker and worked at Walls Factory for some time. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, gardening, making beaded jewelry and cooking for her family. “Tamale time” was her favorite. There is no telling how many dozens of tamales she made in her lifetime. Anyone who ever came to her house knew you would not leave hungry…Before you knew it, she had pulled out five plastic butter or sour cream containers, and you would have a plate full of the best food right in front of you. She enjoyed many things, but caring for children was at the top of the list. She cared for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many others throughout the years, which is how she became known to everyone as “Lely.” Lely had the biggest heart and loved everyone dearly. She was a woman of God and prayed every chance she would get. She prayed over her family and blessed each one before they would leave her house.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Francisco and Rufina Melendez; sisters, Florentina Rodriguez, Guadalupe Vela, Maria Ramona Sanchez; an infant brother; son-in-law, Forest Bloodworth; and a granddaughter, Ericka Gail Valdez.
Agustina is survived by her husband of 64 years, Manuel Acosta; children, Guadalupe Bloodworth, Eulalio Acosta and wife, Melinda, Jesus Manuel Acosta, Irma Valdez and husband, Cesar, Sylvia Valdez and husband, Diego; grandchildren, Jessie Acosta and wife, Katy, Elsa Tindell and husband, Aaron, Leslie Heidi Ortega and husband, Nicholas, Jaime Valdez and wife, Jordyn, Oscar Valdez and partner, Arianna, Miguel Valdez and fiancé, Brittany, Monica Cena and husband, Iran, Diego Valdez Jr and fiancé, Angie, Taylor Acosta, Macy Martinez, Mason Wall, Arisa Towns and husband, Ethan, Ariana Valdez and partner, Rudy, and Noemi Valdez; great-grandchildren, Gabriel and partner Italia, Gavin, Breana, Israel, Daniel, Aiden, Raylee and Rylee.
Lely was the heart of our family, taught us so much, and will be missed beyond measure. Because of her teachings, we are at peace knowing she is resting in Heaven, overjoyed to be reunited with all the family that has passed before her…and knowing that we will be together again.
Our family would like to extend our heartfelt grace and gratitude to the Providence ICU team, especially Letty, as well as Providence Hospice for their wonderful care and respect shown to our sweet Lely!
