Betty Jean Scheh, beloved mother and ‘Gramma’, passed away peacefully at sleep on September 22, 2021 at the age of 94 in Gatesville, Texas.
A celebration of Betty’s life, with her family, will be held from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22, 2021 at The Club at Garden Ridge, 21320 Water Wood Drive, Garden Ridge, Texas.
Betty was born to Eugene Arthur and Dora Borman Rudwick on February 9, 1927, in San Antonio, where she became a life-long resident. She was raised on a dairy farm alongside her brother, ‘Shorty’ and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1945.
Strong in character and quiet in her leadership, Betty was the matriarch of her family. She was raised with a strong work ethic and her strength was tested when at age 30, she became a single parent raising her three children, ages 10, 7 and a newborn baby. Her sons’, Curtis Lee Scheh, Gregory Louis Scheh and daughter, Terry Jo Kenney and the families they created were the greatest pleasures of her life. She loved family traditions, and holidays were her favorite time to cook and bake. She prepared days in advance and happily hosted everyone at her beloved home of 60 years, located across the street from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. For many years, she also faithfully hosted lunch every Sunday for the entire family. She would work all day in the yard on Saturday, cook on Sunday and be back at work on Monday. Another of Betty’s loves was the annual Scheh Family Summer Reunion trip to Port Aransas, where she also spent many happy times as a young girl. One of her sincerest gifts was how she never forgot any of her family’s birthdays and would specifically make contact with them with a card and a Happy Birthday phone call….right up until her oldest son’s Birthday the day before she passed. When not spending time with loved ones, the need to support her family began as an Administrative Assistant in the Health & Beauty Department for Sommers Drug Co. Her career would span 50 years in this role as Sommers eventually sold to Eckerd Drug Co., which in turn was again sold to CVS Pharmacy. Betty retired at the age of 80, after dedicating her loyalty through all of these corporate transitions. Betty was always known to be hardworking, dependable, selfless and a friend to all her many co-workers and lifelong neighbors on Riverdale Drive. While spending the majority of her life in San Antonio, she was able to enjoy the final stages of her life in Gatesville.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Terrell Arthur Rudwick; and daughter-in-law, Penni Scheh, wife of Curtis Scheh.
Betty is survived by her three children, Curtis Scheh of Garden Ridge, Gregory Scheh and wife, Barbara of Gatesville; Terry Kenney and husband, Michael of Pasadena; eight grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Betty’s name to support the beauty of the Meditation Garden at Triumphant Lutheran Church, 21315 Bat Cave Rd., Garden Ridge, TX 78266.
