Billy Dyer Sr.

Billy Dyer Sr., age 83 of Jonesboro, passed away on the evening of April 25, 2020. The family will hold a graveside service at Jonesboro Cemetery on Wednesday, April 29, 2020.

Billy was born to Clessie and Owen Dyer on August 2, 1936. He attended school at Jonesboro, TX. Upon graduation, he received a scholarship to play basketball at Weatherford Jr. College. In 1959, Billy Dyer graduated North Texas State University in Denton, TX and entered the coaching field as assistant coach to Bruce Jones at the Turnersville School. In 1961, Billy was called to duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served in the National Guard at Ft. Polk, LA. Billy became the head coach of both football and basketball at his Alma Mater, the Jonesboro School in 1963. Before his retirement in 1975, he was Jonesboro’s principal as well. From 1975 to present day, he devoted himself to farming and ranching. Alongside him was the love of his life, Barbra Pruitt Dyer. The two were married, July 31, 1964. They lovingly reared one son, Bill Dyer. Throughout their time together they were avid golfers and shared a passion for both girls’ and boys’ Baylor Basketball.

Billy is preceded in death by his, parents, Clessie Dyer Culp and Owen Dyer; stepfather, Earl Culp; in-laws, Ivalene and Nolan Pruitt; son, Bill Dyer Jr.; brother in-laws, Jerry and Don Wolfe, and Dick Gellasch; sister in-law, Darlene Anderson.

Billy is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara Pruitt Dyer; sister in-laws, Nelda Pruitt Gellasch and Louise Pruitt Wolfe, both of Gatesville; brother in-laws, Larry Pruitt and wife Cheryl of Turnersville; and Andy Anderson of Waco; cousins Janda Hill, Judy Schoepf, Debbie Dyer, Ronnie Dyer, Suzie Dyer Arnold and Trey Dyer; nieces, Rhonda Wolfe Carrigan and Jill Cockrell Bartek; nephews, Ricky Wolfe, Rodney Wolfe, Clint Pruitt and Travis Pruitt; great nieces, Bridgette Bartek and Starr Pruitt; great nephews, Kevin Mathis, Jared Wolfe and Conner Wolfe.
