David O. Watson, age 80, of Gatesville, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021 at his residence. Services are scheduled for 3 PM, Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Weaver Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 PM Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at the funeral home.
David O. Watson was born in Gatesville on July 30, 1940 to W.J. and Ruth (Yows) Watson. Cotton, as he was fondly nicknamed for his white hair, grew up in Jonesboro where he was blessed with a large extended family and many cousins that were also close friends. David graduated in 1958 from Jonesboro School. His childhood consisted of working on the farm with his father, Boy Scouts, showing animals, and numerous sports. David, along with his parents and sister Wanda, were members of Jonesboro Baptist Church.
Cotton retired from Fort Hood in 1999 after 29 years of civil service, where he received multiple awards. After retiring from D.P.W, David worked with Bill Roberts and Randy Bartlett completing small construction jobs throughout the community. Cotton is remembered being happiest spending time with friends, gardening, fishing, attending car shows, riding motorcycles, and going on camping trips to Big Bend.
He was preceded in death by parents and nephew Keith Chilton.
David is survived by wife Gwen (Rainer) Watson of 57 years; sister, Wanda (Watson) Chilton and husband, Harold; sons, Joe Dan Watson and wife, Darlena, Jim Watson and wife, Kristi, Mike Hoover and wife, Brenda; nephews, Heath, and Blake Chilton and wife, Sarah; grandchildren, Julia (Watson) Dailey and husband, Rowdy, Garrett and partner Morgan, Jerid, Jimzie, Brody and fiancé, Ricki, Emily and Kari Watson and fiancé, T.J.; great-grandchildren, Zailynn and Paizlynn Watson.
