Dolores Jean Scott

Dolores Scott, age 95 of Gatesville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024. Her family will receive visitors from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at Scott’s Funeral Home. A private graveside service with Dr. Eric Moffett officiating, will be held at a later date in the family plot at Gatesville City Cemetery.

Dolores Jean Scott was born on May 10, 1929, in the small west Texas town of Wink. She was the only child of Floyd Edward Maxey and Dora Lee (Gentry) Maxey. After a brief time spent in Arkansas as an infant, Dolores moved with her mother to Hobbs, New Mexico when she was less than a year old. Dolores was raised in Hobbs where she attended grade school and graduated from Hobbs High School in 1947.

Her early day memories of Hobbs included wooden sidewalks, dirt streets, and people living in tents during the oil boom of the 1930’s. As a child, Dolores loved to attend movies and, while attending high school, she worked as an usher in the old Reel Theater in Hobbs.

She began a career in banking about 1950 at the Lea County State Bank in Hobbs, where she was promoted to the position of Operations Officer. She was very involved with the bank operations during the 1950’s and 1960’s and was recognized as a very dependable and hard worker. Due to her shortness in height, she was referred to at the bank as “Shorty.” She had to stand on a Coke box in order to reach the counter so that she could wait on bank customers.

She was married to Don B. Scott on Jan. 15, 1960, in Carlsbad, New Mexico. They made their home in Hobbs for the majority of their married life until her husband’s retirement in 1989 when they moved to their family ranch near Gatesville.

Dolores joined First Baptist Church in Hobbs in 1936. Even after moving to Texas, she maintained her church membership at First Baptist Church in Hobbs. She was always an active member of the church and sang in the choir for a number of years. She was a frequent participant in her Sunday school class and would often assist her teacher with Bible lessons. When needed, she also played the piano for her Sunday school department. She was also noted for helping those church members who were in need by cooking meals and cleaning their homes. In recent years, while living in Gatesville, she attended Trinity Baptist Church and Pecan Grove Baptist Church.

Dolores loved gospel music, reading the Bible, attending church, and spending time with her only grandchild, Alexander.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Don Scott; her mother, Dora Gentry Pharis; her father, Floyd Maxey; her stepfather, Jack L. Pharis; her stepmother, Ona Matherly; and her brother, Loren Martin.

She is survived by her son, David L. Scott, and her grandson, Alexander Scott, both of Gatesville. Also surviving is her stepson, Steve Scott, of Peralta, New Mexico; brother, Larry Martin and wife, Barbara Jo, of Heber Springs, Arkansas.; and by several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Hillside Medical Lodge and Amedysis Hospice for their care during her final days.
