Edgar Hulon Abbott

Hulon Abbott, age 81 of Gatesville, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 22, 2024. 

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 26, 2024 at Ater Cemetery with Pastor Chris Post officiating. The family will receive visitors on Wednesday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm at Scott’s Funeral Home.

Edgar Hulon Abbott was born on March 4, 1943 in Norman, Oklahoma to the late Barney Hulon and Mary Myers Abbott. He grew up in the Ater community and attended school in Jonesboro, graduating from Jonesboro High School in 1961. He went to work as a Machinist for Oil Well Division of U.S. Steel in Garland and retired 1988. He married Elizabeth Alexander on June 29, 1974, and the couple made their home in the Dallas area before moving to Gatesville in 1988. Hulon owned and managed the Red Barn Restaurant in Jonesboro until his second retirement in 1997. He also drove a school bus for twelve years for the Jonesboro Independent School District before retiring for the third time in 2011. He was a member of the Gatesville Masonic Lodge #197 A.F. & A.M. and received a 50-year service award in 2016. Hulon enjoyed bowling, playing golf, going to the casinos, playing dominoes, watching TV and horse racing. He never met a stranger and always enjoyed being around people, visiting and talking. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church for 36 years. 

Hulon was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Connie Abbott; infant brother, John Abbott; sisters, Patsy Dougherty, and Martha Haase; infant great granddaughter, Chesa Abbott; and nephew, Bo Timmons. 

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elizabeth; sons, Earl Abbott and wife, Sharon, Robert Abbott and wife, Seantelle, and James Abbott and wife, Deb; grandchildren, Brandon Abbott and wife, Ara, Heather McCullough and husband, Josh, Justin Abbott and wife, Brenda, Spencer Abbott and wife, Michelle, Taylor Deatherage, Logan Abbott, Lucy Abbott, and Laynee Abbott; great grandchildren, Kayla Abbott, Audrey Abbott, Seth Clement, Declan Clement, Liam Abbott, Lyla Abbott, Amelia Abbott, Kathran Abbott, and Kairi Abbott; nieces and nephews, Ginger Dossman, Wendy Suggs and husband, Guy, Rockie Swain and husband, Robert, Penny Timmons, Gene Morgan, Kathy Morgan, Billy Morgan, Tracy Barrett and husband, Bret, Nathan Alexander and wife, Sarah, Joseph Alexander and Marissa, Timothy Alexander and wife Tiffany, Hannah Alexander and Arturo, Peter Alexander and wife, Sara, and Elizabeth Alexander; and numerous great nieces and nephews. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, P.O Box 86, Jonesboro, Texas 76538, Jonesboro Alumni Association, c/o Jonesboro ISD, 14909 TX 36, Jonesboro, Texas 76538, or any charity of your choice.
