Florence Benita Maxwell was called upon God on December 30, 2023. Though her body is met with earth, her soul lives forever in the memories we hold.
A Remembrance will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2024, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gatesville, where Florence will be laid to rest between her mother and father.
Florence Maxwell was born August 3, 1944 in Gatesville, Texas to the late Glendell and Anna Ruth Brown. After many years living in Gatesville, Florence moved to Austin to attend college at Huston-Tillotson University, where she received a degree in Sociology and also became a member of Delta Sorority. At the age of twenty-one, Florence met the love of her life, Louis Maxwell at a local hamburger joint. Florence and Louis had a successful marriage of fifty-eight years, full of laughter, love and staying by each other's side.
Through her social work Florence was committed to serving the Austin community especially those experiencing mental illness or homelessness. She participated in bridge clubs, dance clubs, and loved to meet new people. She was talented in sewing, crafting, gardening, thrifting, and cooking. She loved to travel and was a woman of fashion, faith, and family.
Florence was preceded in death by her mother, Anna Ruth Brown, and father, Glendell Brown, who she described as a “Rolling Stone”. She is survived by her sons, Aaron, Russell, and Heath; brothers, Herman and Ralph; sister, Glenda Ann; and grandchildren, Nick, Brittany, Claira, Amir, Summayah, and Saeed; and great grandchildren, Cora, Tyrus, Lena and Vivianna.
