Throughout his military career, he was accompanied by Linda and their sons, James and Jeffrey, to various duty stations in North Dakota, Arkansas, California, Nebraska, and England. Jim dedicated 24 years of service to the military, his career culminated as the Squadron Commander of the 394th Missile Maintenance Squadron, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

After retiring in 1991, the O'Brien family settled in Gatesville, Texas, where Jim embarked on a rewarding second career at Central Texas College in Killeen. He served as Director of Facilities Maintenance for 18 years before retiring in 2011.
