Jerry Miller Gunn, age 78, of Hamilton, passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2018 after a long battle with cancer.  Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 21, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Hamilton.  Burial will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service.Jerry Miller was born to H. T. (Pete) Gunn and Elizabeth Miller Gunn on December 11, 1939 in Hamilton, Texas.  He spent most of his life in Hamilton.  Miller graduated from Hamilton High School in 1958.  He was an outstanding athlete in football, basketball, and track all three years.  Miller played on two district championship teams.  He was given a football scholarship to Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.  During his freshman year, he severely injured his right knee and returned home to rehab.  After rehab, Miller attended John Tarleton Jr. College where he joined the track team.  He ran the 100 yard dash in 9.6 seconds when the world record was 9.3 seconds.  He also received Jr. College All American Status in track.  Miller finished his college career at Stephen F. Austin with the love of his life, Charlotte Campbell Gunn.  After graduation, they moved to Killeen where Miller taught history and coached Jr. High School football.  They later moved to Waco and Miller taught history and coached at University High School.  He coached football, basketball, and track.  In the early 1970’s, Miller returned to Hamilton to work with his parents in Miller-Gunn, the family business.  But his heart was really in teaching and coaching.  He joined the staff at Hamilton High School and was never happier.  He truly loved his students.  Miller enjoyed hunting, fishing, and searching for arrowheads in Hamilton County.  He was a devoted Longhorn Fan who lived and died burnt orange. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.He is survived by his son, Curtis Scott Gunn; grandsons, Tyre and Seth Gunn; great-granddaughter Jordan; and brother, Robert Harold Gunn and wife, Sharan.Memorials may be made to Hamilton High School, 611 S. College St., Hamilton, TX 76531 or to Solaris Healthcare, 108 N. Bell Street, Hamilton, TX 76531, the local hospice caregivers.
