John T. Herring, Jr. age, 92 of the Slater community, passed away on Monday, November 16, 2020 in Waco.
Private interment was held at Ater Cemetery and memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.
John was born on November 21, 1927 in Coryell County, to the late John Thomas Herring, Sr. and Etheleen Kays Herring. He grew up and went to school in the Ater community. In 1945, was drafted into the Army during WWII and was trained as a medic. He married Wanda Ingram on January 13, 1951. John was a civil service employee at Ft. Hood, for over 30 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member of King Baptist Church. Some of his favorite activities was hunting with coon dogs, fishing and raising greyhounds to race. He was always interested in learning new things and in his later years took a special interest in instructional YouTube videos.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Herring; brothers, Monroe Herring, Darrell Herring; sisters, Pauline Davis, Sibyl Brown, Alvaree Kent and Margie Pruitt.
John is survived by his wife of 69 years, Wanda Herring; sons, Mike Herring, John J. Herring and wife, Barbara; daughters, Marcy Pitts and husband, Tim, Pam Herring; brothers, Bill Herring and wife, Kay, Jack Herring and wife, Pat, Roger (Dood) Herring and wife, Sharon, Charles (Fuzz) Herring and wife, Janice; one grandchild, Kori Kortis and one great grandchild, Kutter Kortis.
In lieu of flowers, the family has designated memorials be made to King Baptist Church, 601 CR 135, Gatesville, TX 76528.
