Oral Lee West was born on September 23, 1959 in Gatesville to the late James Edward West, Jr. and Leona Marie (Smith) West. He attended school in Oglesby and graduated from Oglesby High School in 1978. Lee began a career as a cabinet maker in 1974 when he went to work for his brother, Thomas. Throughout his career, he worked at Superior Custom Cabinets in Garland, Don and Al’s Cabinets in McGregor, West Woodworks in Moody and finished his lifelong career of 45 years, retiring from Cabinet Specialist in Waxahachie.
Lee was a master craftsman. He created many beautiful pieces of furniture and took great pride in the intricate pieces he designed. His grandfather clock and coffee table being two of his most treasured. Later in life, Lee discovered that he had a passion and skill for photography. Lee was able to capture nature's details in his photos that others would ordinarily miss. He loved the sunrises and sunsets and always referred to those as God’s Masterpieces. Lee not only had a love for music, but he had an extraordinary gift for being able to name albums, titles, artists, and quote lyrics of all genres. Lee often said, “Listening to music heals my soul.”
Lee loved Jesus and often talked about how he came to learn about His love through a faithful servant, Mrs. Hilton. The impact she made on his life, led Lee to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, James Earl West and Joe Travis West.
Lee will be greatly missed by his surviving brothers and sisters; Donald West and wife, Gladys of Oglesby; Thomas West of Canton; Richard West and wife, Patsy of Canton; Peggy Finkenbinder of Moffat; Judy Bodnar and husband, Gary of McGregor; Betty Dodge of Moody; Tawana Nance and husband, Tommy of Troy; and Kathy Popelka of Temple and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
