Maurice Eldon “Cotton” Young, age 97, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2019 surrounded by his family. Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December, 18, 2019 at Scott’s Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Wood Cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, December 17, 2019 at the funeral home. Maurice was born in Pancake, Texas to Henry D. and Grace Murrell Young on February 7, 1922. He attended school at Mt. Zion and later graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1940. After graduating, he started farming with his family and later was drafted in the army in 1942. Maurice entered into active military service on November 7, 1942. Following basic training, he was assigned to Battery A, 346th field artillery in Italy. His military specialty was gun crewman, light artillery 844, handling any position on the 105 millimeter artillery guns. The campaigns he was involved in were Rome-Arno, Northern Appennines and Po Valley. Decorations included the American Theater Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Ribbon and two overseas bars. He received his honorable discharge at Fort Sam Houston on November 7, 1945. In 1945, he returned home from World War II and continued farming with his family. In 1949, he met and married the love of his life, Henrietta Hering. They continued farming and ranching and raising their 3 sons; David, Paul, James, and one daughter, Robin. He enjoyed dancing, playing dominoes, gardening, picking up pecans, feeding his fish, and riding his horse, Fancy. He loved to go check his livestock and go to the field and see his crops grow. He was the secretary of the Jonesboro school board for many years and helped get the new school built. Maurice is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Imogene Farquhar and Virginia Reynolds, two brothers, Jack Young and Henry Durham Young, Jr., and a grandson, Michael Clemons. Maurice is survived by his wife of 70 years, Henrietta Young; sons, David Young and wife, Judy, Paul Young and wife, Tammy, James Young and wife, Dianna; daughter, Robin Thomas and husband, Jody; grandchildren, Kevin Young and wife, Sara, Lori Anderson and husband, Anthony, Chris Clemons and wife, Terri, Scott Clemons and wife, Sara, Justin Young and wife, Shanda, Bayleigh Young, Trevor Powers and wife, Catrina, Courtney Mayberry and husband, Bo, Evan Pardo and wife, Ashley, Tyler Young and wife, Kinsey, Jed Young and wife, Molly, Katie Wise and husband, Brian, Zach Thomas and special friend, Keeley Powell, and Holly Thomas. Great-grandchildren Wyatt Young, Garrett Young, Tyler Anderson, Toby Anderson, Trace Anderson, Gage Clemons and wife, Kayla, Christian Clemons, Cheyenne Clemons, Raylen Clemons, Hudson Clemons, Addison Young, Sutton Young, Preslee Mayberry, Jaxon Mayberry, Logan Mayberry, Kali Mayberry, Braxton Powers, Audrina Powers, Karlee Powers, Aspyn Pardo, Aubree Young, Jaycee Young, Elijah Young, Isaiah Young, Kaezlee Young, Connor Young, Nolan Young, and Cotton Cooper.
