Michael Edward Winters, age 65 of Gatesville, passed away surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, March 4, 2019 after a long illness. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Scott’s Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Bruce Cox officiating. Mike was born in Port Lavaca, Texas on October 18, 1953 to Margaret and Ed Winters. He started school in Mound before transferring in the third grade to Gatesville for the remaining school years. In the Mound, he was given the name Big Mike to differentiate between two Mikes and this name followed him throughout his life. He was a natural instigator of “creative activities” for the kids in the Mound. During his childhood he was known for taking on dares which normally landed him in a lot of hot water. Mike saw things from a different perspective than others around him. He was very intelligent but saw no reason to give more than a minimal effort in the school room, but rather, he put most of his efforts into seeing just how far he could push his teachers and school officials. This, too, landed him in a lot of hot water. Mike had a quick wit and could speak on any subject. He delighted in creating information for the parts he did not know just to see who would believe him. Mike was a member of the Hornet football team for some time where he was known for kicking off with his bare foot. He graduated from GHS in 1972. He was a retired truck driver, having driven for Tulsa Wholesale for many years, then switching to an independent truck driver until his retirement. He was a member of the White Mound Baptist Church. Mike was a big man with an even bigger heart. He was very loyal to his friends and family. He had a sweetness that those who spent time with him saw in him. He was sick for so many years and had many professionals care for him who shared with the family that they loved him dearly because he was so sweet. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Edward Winters, and his sister, Patti Winters Suksi. He is survived by his mother, Margaret Winters of Gatesville; special friend, Connie Hute of Gatesville; sister, Carla Braziel of Hewitt; brother, Phillip Winters of Gatesville; nieces Cheyenne Gomez of Fort Worth, Macy Winters of Gatesville, and Charli Winters of Gatesville; and two great nephews, Elijah Gomez and Ezra Gomez both of Fort Worth. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mound Cemetery Assn., P.O. Box 177, Mound, TX 76558.
