Virginia Tommie Lee Shults Haferkamp, age 91, known as Tommie Lee to family, Tommie to friends, and Gran to her grandchildren, went to be with her Lord Saturday, June 1, 2019. Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at Scotts Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at Scotts Funeral Home, Monday, June 3, 5:00–7:00 p.m.
Tommie Lee was born November 23, 1927, in the Owl Creek Community in what is now Fort Hood, to parents Thomas Shults and Lucinda Virginia Powell Shults. She married Verna Willie Haferkamp December 13, 1947, and they made their home in the Gatesville area. She graduated from Gatesville High School at age 16 and went to work for local attorney, Robert Brown. She worked for the Texas Youth Council for many years and retired from the Texas Department of Corrections. An accomplished seamstress, her favorite pass times were sewing, crocheting, reading, and writing poetry and short stories.
She was preceded in death by husband, Verna Haferkamp; parents, Thomas Shults and Virgie Shults; brother, J.W. Shults; and sister, Oneta Shults Bates.
Tommie Lee is survived by daughter, Diane Haferkamp Flowers, of Dallas; son, Lynn Haferkamp of Gatesville; grandchildren, Michael Flowers of Dallas, Macie Haferkamp Chrisman of Cuero, and Rowdy Haferkamp, of Cuero; two great-grandchildren; sister, Lois Pearl Shults Cathey, of Duncanville and numerous nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the staff at The Welcome Program at Coryell Memorial Hospital for their extraordinary care for many years, and to the staff of Amedisys Hospice for their care the last few weeks.
